Relaxing Warm Foot Soak Before Sleep

We’re going to start a string in the blog that concentrates on comfort and well being in terms of foot health.  Today’s entry will present some ideas for soaking your feet before going to bed to help provide a better night’s sleep.

Epsom salt is one of the main additives for a good foot soak.  Epsom salt in warm water can remove toxins from your body that can cause inflammation and body aches.  Epsom salts also help in fighting infection.  Advocates of Epsom salts also claim it can reduce inflammation due to gout and eliminate odor.  You’ll need enough warm water to cover your feet.  Use a basin big enough for your feet to be in a relaxed position and not cramped.  And do watch that water temperature!  Especially those suffering from the loss of feeling due to diabetic foot, water too hot can be dangerous.  Add ½ cup of Epsom salt to the warm water.  Soak your feet for 30 to 60 minutes twice a week.

In addition to Epsom salts, lavender is a good essential oil to add to a foot bath.  Lavender is a relaxing aromatherapy oil and a perfect addition to a foot soak before bed.  If by chance you’d like a bit of an uplifting aromatherapy experience, peppermint or eucalyptus oil will provide a bit of a stimulating soak.  Adding 4 to 5 drops of the essential oil should be sufficient.  Be sure to buy the purest oil you can find for the best results.
